Redwood Literacy exists so that all students with literacy struggles can access their dreams.
We believe that with the right instruction and unwavering support, every student—regardless of age, diagnosis, zip code, or background—can become a confident, capable reader and writer. At Redwood, we cultivate hope, restore confidence, and help students dramatically improve their foundational academic skills through evidence-based, individualized instruction.
Redwood was founded in 2018 by Andre and Kait Feriante, two former Chicago Public School and Noble Charter School teachers who saw firsthand how transformative structured literacy interventions could be—especially for students with dyslexia and other learning differences. What started as a deep conviction in a classroom grew into a mission to make these interventions accessible to
all students who needed them. They rented a storefront down the street from their home in Rogers Park and launched with a 6-week summer program. At the end of that summer program, 10 families approached them about continuing into the school year because they had seen their kids make more progress in just 6 weeks of instruction as they had in the entire previous school year. Andre and Kait said yes and
Redwood Day School was born.
In 2019, longtime CPS educator Rebecca Sinclair joined as Co-Founder & Head of School at Redwood Day School. Together, Andre (a dyslexic adult and educator), Kait, and Becky (both with decades of experience supporting students with dyslexia) set out to build a space where students could be seen, supported, and successful—not in spite of their learning differences, but because those differences were understood, honored, and met with the right tools. This was the beginning of Redwood Literacy’s sister non-profit,
Redwood Schools.Since then, Redwood has grown into a vibrant and inclusive community of students, educators, and families committed to justice, joy, and results. Whether you're walking into one of our learning centers, joining us online, or enrolling in one of our schools, you’ll find a team that sees the whole child, teaches with research-based precision, and never gives up.We know what it feels like to watch a child struggle—and we know what’s possible when the right help comes along. That’s the Redwood story.
And we’re just getting started.
