What Is the Redwood Method?

What is the Redwood Method: online 1:1 dyslexia instruction.

If you just watched our video, you probably have one question: what is the Redwood Method, and is it right for my child? The Redwood Method is our 12-month, one-on-one online program for kids with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and other learning differences. A certified specialist works with your child two to five days a week. We track progress with national benchmark data, and we manage the schedule so you don’t have to.

This post walks you through how it works, who it is for, and what happens after you book a call.

What Is the Redwood Method?

The Redwood Method is not after-school tutoring by the hour. It is a year-long remediation plan built around your child’s data. Every student starts with an assessment. From there, our team writes an individualized plan, matches your child with a specialist, and sets a weekly schedule that stays the same all year.

Our instructors use research-based programs such as Wilson Reading System®, SPELL-Links™, EBLI™, UFLI Foundations, Writing Our World®, and Redwood Math. Most hold master’s degrees, and many are special education certified. Sessions happen in Pearl, our own virtual classroom, so it never feels like a video call from 2020.

Who the Redwood Method Is For

We built this program for parents who are ready to make this the year. You have probably tried a few things already. Maybe the school keeps saying “wait and see.” Perhaps a tutor helped with homework, but the reading gap never closed.

The Redwood Method asks for a real commitment. Your child meets with a specialist several days a week for a full year. That takes time, consistency, and a meaningful financial investment from your family. In return, you get a plan, a team, and data that shows you exactly what is changing.

It is a strong fit if you:

  • Want measurable reading, writing, or math growth this year, not someday.
  • Can protect two to five sessions a week on your family calendar.
  • Are ready to invest time and financial resources in your child’s long-term success.
  • Want a team to lead the plan so you can stop guessing.

It is probably not the right fit if you are looking for homework help or want to try a few sessions and see. We would rather tell you that on a call than take your time.

Step One: The Academic Clarity Plan

Many parents ask if they can try Redwood before committing to a year. Yes. Your trial is the Academic Clarity Plan, and it costs $150.

Your child meets one-on-one with a Redwood specialist for a baseline assessment. Within three to five business days, you receive a written report. It shows where your child is today, what we recommend, how many days a week they should meet, and whether Redwood is the right fit.

We will also tell you what the first year or two of instruction could look like. That includes how long it may take your child to reach grade level or other academic goals. If you decide to enroll, your $150 goes toward your first invoice. If you don’t, you still keep a report you can share with your child’s school.

Reading, Writing, and Math: Choose What Your Child Needs

The Redwood Method covers reading, writing, and math. Your child can work on one subject, a reading and writing combination, or all three. We recommend a dosage of two to five days a week, depending on your child’s age, needs, and goals. Higher dosage usually means faster progress and an earlier finish line.

How the 12-Month Program Works

The Redwood Method is a 12-month program. Families can pay for the full year up front and save 10%, or they can make quarterly payments. We walk through the details on your consultation call.

We run year-round because consistency is what closes the gap. Kids who stop for the summer often spend the fall relearning what they already knew. Year-round instruction helps your child avoid the summer slide and keep building.

That said, we also want your family to have a life. Four weeks off are built into the year, and you do not pay for those weeks. They include our Thanksgiving and winter breaks, plus time that is yours for a spring break trip, a summer camp week, or a family vacation. We also close for a few holidays. If you need to miss a session beyond that, we reschedule it within two weeks, based on your instructor’s availability.

Your First 30 Days: The Fit Check

Sometimes the personality match is not quite right. Other times, a new sport changes your afternoons. During the first 30 days, we will switch your instructor or change your schedule for free. There are no fees and no hard feelings.

Your First 12 Weeks: Our Progress Guarantee

After the first 12 weeks, you receive a norm-referenced data report using DIBELS® 8. This shows how much progress your child has made compared with students in the same grade nationally.

We guarantee growth. With a minimum of 90% attendance at two or more sessions a week, your child will show documented raw score growth on at least one DIBELS subtest within the first 90 days. If they do not, we provide a free month of resources until your child is back on track. That is how confident we are. You can read the full details in What Our 12-Week DIBELS Guarantee Really Means.

Not sure what growth should look like? Our guide on how to know if your child is making reading growth explains the numbers in plain language.

Does the Redwood Method Work?

Last school year, all 108 students who completed fall and spring DIBELS 8 benchmarks with us finished the year reading better than they started. On average, they grew 29% more than the national expectation for a full year. Many of them started the year well behind their peers.

Numbers matter, but so do the moments at home. Here is what one mom sent her child’s instructor this week:

“What’s your secret??? Maya is actually excited for her sessions. I hear Maya laughing during them. Afterward, she is smiling and in a good mood. She had a math test this week and instead of curling up into the fetal position, she said, ‘All I can do is try my best.’ No tears. No sulking. No silent treatment of the mean mommy who makes her go to tutoring. This has never been Maya in math mode.”

What Parents Say on Google

“My daughter went to Redwood twice a week for two years. At first, the idea of this much intervention was daunting… My daughter started two years behind in reading and is now at grade level.”

Janice K., Google review, 2025

“Academically, she has gone from reading approximately two grade levels behind to now reading on grade level. That kind of progress has meant so much to our family, but seeing the confidence she has gained has been just as meaningful.”

Traci V., Google review, 2026

“She loved books but could barely decode, and her writing was indecipherable. After two years of working with Redwood’s fantastic tutors, she was reading and writing above grade level… Redwood was worth it a hundred times over!”

Zach P., Google review, 2026

“My son has attended for two years and has made significant progress in his reading, along with a huge boost in confidence… He attends twice a week, actively participates, and leaves every session happy.”

Megan M., Google review, 2026

“My child is reading above grade level and started below grade level weeks ago, much gratitude.”

Kimberly B., Google review, 2025

Frequently Asked Questions About the Redwood Method

How much does the Redwood Method cost?

Your child’s plan depends on the subjects and the number of days a week they need. We share the investment on your consultation call, after we learn about your child. Families can pay for the year up front and save 10%, or pay quarterly. We can also talk through ESA and other funding options in qualified states.

Why a full year instead of month to month?

Real remediation takes consistent instruction over time. Month-to-month plans make it easy to stop right before progress shows up. A year gives your child enough time to build skills that last. Plus, the four built-in weeks off mean you only pay for the weeks we teach.

What if my child doesn’t click with their instructor?

In the first 30 days, we will rematch your child with a new instructor for free. Rapport matters, and we want your child to look forward to every session.

What about vacations, sports, and summer?

Four weeks off are built in, so you can take the spring break trip or the camp week. If a new season changes your afternoons, we reset your weekly slot around it. Beyond your weeks off, we reschedule missed sessions within two weeks.

How will I know it’s working?

You receive monthly updates on what your child worked on, plus a norm-referenced data report after the first 12 weeks. Because most schools already use DIBELS, your child’s teacher can read the report right away.

Is online as effective as in person?

Yes. Our online students get the same instructors, curricula, and data tracking as our in-person students. Online also widens your instructor match, because we are not limited to who lives nearby.

My child was just diagnosed. Where do I start?

Start with our guide for parents who just found out their child has dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. Then book a free consultation call, and we will help you map out the next step.

Do I have to sit in on sessions?

No. Younger children sometimes need help logging in during the first week. After that, sessions are between your child and their specialist.
